The Polaskia Chichpe is an evergreen plant, also known as a Chichipe, Chichibe, Chichituna, or Chichitun in Spanish. This Branching tree-like cactus is an extraordinary example of how cacti are truly arid sculptures of the plant world.

Named as a tribute to Charles Polaski, an American cactus lover from Oklahoma, the genus Polaskia consists of two identified species, both growing to a similar scale, yet in slightly different formations. With age comes thick branching arms. The Polaskia Chichipe looks more closely related to the highly demanded Myrtillocactus (Blue Candle) genus, while the second species, Polaskia Chende looks more similar to the Stenocereus genus. Although often confused for Stenocereus or Myrtillocactus, both varieties of Polaskia are highly valued for their sculpturesque shapes and uniqueness, no two plants ever look the same.

Growing to around 5 meters tall in their lifetime, the Poliska is a slow-growing giant, hosting grey thorns that commonly start from a red crown of new growth. The Poliska’s white/cream flowers are somewhat daisy-like, forming from the areolas close to the top of each branch. These flowers showcase shades of subtle green or pink and bloom in the middle of summer, bearing small fleshy berries.

Growing naturally at high altitudes of over 2,000 meters above sea level, this cactus can adjust to frost in dry areas, making them a great option for cactus gardens in Canberra. Cactus Vision suggests consulting them before adjusting this cactus to your colder climate area to ensure the transition is pain-free for your plant.

It is important to note that the Polaskia prefers fertilizer only once a year in spring, making it easy to cater to when it comes to maintenance. Although uncommon, watch out for red spider mites, scale insects, and mealybugs.
